It is said that the Core Sound is not an easy
place to get to and that many learn it is even a harder place to leave.
“Knowing where you are Down East means knowing that the beam from the Cape
Lookout lighthouse flashes every 15 seconds, pulsing like a heartbeat over Cape
Point and Shackleford Banks. To those at sea, it means danger. To the sons and
daughters of the Bankers, it means home.” (from “This is Core Sound”
http://www.coresound.com/coresound.htm ) The eastern coastline of North
Carolina in Carteret County around Core Sound is not heavily populated; the
marshes, islands and banks of Down East are peppered with small towns. It is a
region with long traditions of water fowling, fishing and their associated
crafts. As a result, go to Harker’s Island if you want a hand carved Duck
decoy. Villages like Harker’s and Marshallberg have been home to generations of
boat builders from seaworthy fishing craft, ferries, mail boats and skiffs.
Down East is covered with so much water that boats were often the major means of
transportation. Early craftsmen took advantage of the natural resources
provided by the maritime forest and built the first Core Sound flat bottomed
sailing skiffs out of native heart pine and oak and then planed juniper for the
sides. The skiff was uniquely suited for navigating shallow marshes, perhaps
towing for mullet or waiting for duck to fly over. Today Core Sound Skiffs are
popular easy sailing open keeled day sailors for exploring and cruising.
